I finally got back to Oahu after 4 months of Canadian winter and everything was magical again. The drive to the North Shore (which I usually ignore because I'm in mid afternoon traffic) seemed so beautiful and bright...After months of getting used to the gray and the mysterious historic misty muddy beauty of Canada, Hawaii was like a Pantone chart of colours or a photoshop world where the saturation was turned up to 100. After sleeping off my jetlag, my friend Conner and I went over to Cholo Steve's place who has a pool (skate kind) in his backyard. (the one in the painting below). He's the guy in the picture skating. He bought the original painting so that was sweet. Plus Jay Adams, was the one taking the picture in the painting, I got to meet him and he's been my ultimate skate hero since I started skating! I didn't know I was going to meet him that day and coincidently I was wearing my "Jay Adams" shirt (blue plaid like the one he wore on the poster of Dogtown & Z-Boys). I wish I could go back in time to the day I bought it and started wearing it so I could tell myself "Hay guess what, 8 years from now you'll be wearing that shirt when you meet him in person!" Made my whole trip. The next days was a shark dive tour organized as a belated birthday present. It was one of those activities that I just never did because it was a tourista thing, but after an unbeleavable half hour in the water with 20-25 16 foot Galapagos sharks, I was convinced. I went to the Wyland gallery right after to set up for the weekend's show and it was really exciting to get my new work up on the wall! I finally got my own full wall all to myself! I've been working hard for a long time to make happen and it was nice to take a moment and enjoy the result! Show time was the Saturday of Easter weekend and i was nervous as usual. I was there early and it didn't take long to fill up.The art party was also the after party for the Tidal 9 Women's Pipeline Pro. There were a lot of pros from the contest and I was nervous to circulate, but pretty soon the awesome girls at the gallery were getting me talking to people. (I'm not good in crowds, I get shy). I even got to talk to Rochelle Ballard, who I've seen around the North Shore for ages but never had a good reason to introduce myself. I used "hay, I'm a Piper Girls ambassador too!" as my excuse and pretty soon I was talking it up with a long time hero! I had another show in Waikiki, which was a bit last minute and not very well advertised. I didn't put much hope in the results of the show, but it was actually pretty good! While it may not have been advertized, you can always count on Waikiki for walk by traffic. I stayed over at the Wyland hotel and after a couple post show beers, ended my long standing Karaoke virginity. The chosen song was America by Simon and Garfunkel (a tribute to a country that has given me so much magic). It seemed like I was just settling in and it was time to fly back to Canada (sadly, the authorities only gave me 2 weeks this trip, which still happens every once in a while as a result of an over-stay years ago). It was expecially tough to say goodbye to my hanai family this time because my visit was so short, but it also gave me big incentive to get in line at the US embassy when I got back to Canada and file for the proper papers so I can stick around and make art! Meh, enough of that boring stuff... I got back to Toronto in the middle of a wind storm and slept for 16 hours. I woke up just in time to get to my next show at The Bait Shop Gallery, a wicked art gallery with a half pipe in it! The show was a display of 20 different artist's work on skate decks for sale to benefit the Princess Margret Cancer Hospital. I got to meet some art heros and got some really nice feedback on my deck. Although it's sad that the shows are over for now, my favorite part of the end is the beginning. I'm now excited to get back to my studio and start the whole process over again!

Erica - the lovely Youth Education Director here at KAB and overall awesome girl was chosen to be in Electra's Way To Roll Campaign. Her story is super espiring so I was so happy to see her chosen. They wanted her to cast someone for Keep A Breast for the shot... so I got chosen to be plastered up for the shoot!! So stoked to be part of it!! Can't wait for everyone to see them. It was pretty funny to be in a cast for two hours though.. and cold and slimy... usually the process only takes 25 minutes. I just stood in the background like a statue but it was super fun and the photographer and stylist were so nice and rad. So great to work with everyone.
This is the one I want!

So today is a big scary day for me. My mom and my grandmother are flying in from Colorado to be casted for a Keep A Breast event that will showcase generational casts of families effected by Breast Cancer. Kassia Meador and her mom are going to be casted too! I think it's going to be an amazing inspirational show and I'm excited to be spearheading it.
We're also having an event on the ROOF of the San Diego Hard Rock cafe at the end of the month. If you are 21+ you should come out!!!!

Ok back to this generational cast exhibition.. did I mention we are going to also be doing a Walk?! Something Keep A Breast has never done before! It's $20 to participate and it will be held all over California but mainly our big ta-da will be at the Peir in Santa Monica.. I will follow with details as they come... it's still a work in progress. But if it goes well we want to launch this in 10 other cities across america!!!
So basiclly pipergirls.. I have been so busy lately it has been insane. We are working on a colloboration with Peta2 that I can't wait to unveil. And... my clothing line Pony Attack has been insanely busy working on cut and sew item with a video and fun things.. I will show that to you later this week. Ahhh!! I gotta get back to work. Coco Ho has been on a roll lately. At just 17 years old she qualified for the prestigious 2009 WCT tour which is a huge accomplishment. Then she came out of the gates a blazing with a 3rd place finish taking down many of the tour vetrans in the first WCT event of the year, the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast of Australia. She followed that up by finishing 2nd place in solid surf at the notorious Margaret River 5 star WQS event in western Australia. It's going to be an exciting year with Coco on tour and we can't wait to see what she is going to stir up the rest of the year!
Big news with Coco is she just signed with Nike 6.0 as her new footwear sponsor! Congrats Coco. Nike 6.0 has build building a superstar team of female athletes and now has one of the most dominate female surf teams out there with Coco, Carissa Moore, and Malia Manuel.
Coco is also inking some other really cool deals she even has her very own MYPLASH PREPAID VISA CARD! Along side a group of top female action sports athletes such as Torah Bright, Sarah Burke, Ellery Hollingsworth, Kassia Meador, and Jodie Nelson. These cards are specifically made for teens and their parents. So instead of caring around cash you can have your parents recharge your very own VISA card and the best part is instead of having a boring card you get to pick from your favorite female action sports athletes or favorite bands. Remember this name Chandler Parr as you will be seeing a lot more of her in the future. The 16 year old from Malibu, Ca. has been making some noise lately. A few months back Chandler secured top honors in the Girls Under 16 division at the Salt Creek Rip Curl Grom Search. For her effort, Chandler won a trip to Bells Beach to surf in the International GromSearch finals (along with Boys Under 16 winner Nat Young), which will be held at the same time as the Rip Curl WCT contest. WHICH IS HAPPENING NOW! Chandler will be going head to head with some of the top female amateurs from across the world!
Good luck Chandler! From the looks of things Chandler is on quite the roll so keep an eye out for her as this is just the beginning. When Chandler gets back from Australia she will be heading straight into the National Championships. Chandler currently goes to Malibu High School and maintains a 3.5 GPA! In her spare time she also enjoys skating, wakeboarding, and snowboarding. She has designed her own t-shirts, shorts, and swimwear for her clothing sponsor O'quinn.
To top it all off Chandler is an avid guitarist and loves music! We'll have to find out who her favorite bands are! Chandler is sponsored by Body Glove, Freestyle watches, and is a member of the Pac Sun Surf team! We look forward to seeing more great things from Chandler!

Recently n Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado, the 2nd Annual Covergirl Snow Angels Invitational went off under beautiful blue skies. Fresh off about a foot of fresh snow, it cracked blue and the attendees filed up to the pipe for an hour-and-a-half jam session in a perfectly cut SPT halfpipe. Kelly Clark, Soko Yamaoka, Tricia Byrnes, Ellery Hollingsworth, Sophie Rodriguez, Paulina Ligocka, Molly Aguirre, Kaitlyn Farrington, Maddy Schaffrick, Lynn Haug, Lizzy Beerman, Meg Pugh, Claire Bidez and founder/host/ripper Gretchen Bleiler provided the buffet of action while the large number of media in attendance clicked, jotted and filmed away.
Jam sessions are great for snowboarding. Less pressure means less tension and less tension makes the riders more comfortable in knowing that they don’t have a limited amount of runs to dial in their tricks. This was evident in the riding of Molly Aguirre, who was putting down backside nines. Kelly Clark and Gretchen Bleiler who were going bigger than most of the field. Ellery Hollingsworth was putting down some of the most technical pipe runs I have ever seen from a girl her age. Tricia Byrnes’ consistency was awe-inspiring. Meg Pugh was going huge, and 14 year old Maddy Schaffrick is officially the next big thing in women’s snowboarding. This pre-teen pipe terrorizer was putting down the most technical trick of the day in her switch backside sevens. There are very few girls in snowboarding landing that trick, but one that comes to mind is 2009 X Games gold medalist Torah Bright. All in all, it was a fun contest to watch due to the easygoing atmosphere, the progressive riding from the ladies and Oakley’s Chris Hotell and Liam Barrett announcing the event in full cowboy garb. Huge thanks to Aspen/Snowmass, Covergirl Cosmetics, Oakley eyewear, Vitamin Water, K2 Snowboards, Giro Helmets, Herbal Essences, Nike Snowboarding, Fuel TV, and another thank you to Matty Swanson, Liesl Holtz, Chris Hotell, Liam Barrett, Matt Murray and Gretchen Bleiler! It was one hell of a bash to kick off one hell of a contest.
2009 Covergirl Snow Angels Invitational Results: 1sst: Kelly Clark 2nd : Gretchen Bleiler 3rd : Ellery Hollingsworth 4th : Lynn Haug 5th place: Kaitlyn Farrington Best Trick: Maddy Schaffrick, switch backside seven Highest Air: Kelly Clark Most Progressive Rider: Maddy Schaffrick VIDEO COMING SOON!

Big.jpg) | Lima Claims Maiden ASP Dream Tour Victory at Rip Curl Women's ProBELLS BEACH, Victoria (Sunday, April 12, 2009) – Silvana Lima (BRA), 24, claimed her maiden ASP Women’s World Tour victory today, defeating reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion and two-time defending event winner Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, to take the Rip Curl Women’s Pro presented by Ford New Fiesta and become the first Brazilian in history ever to win at the iconic venue.
Event No. 2 of 8 on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Rip Curl Women’s Pro culminated today with an action-packed Final that saw both athletes pushing the levels of high-performance surfing. Despite both surfers racking up high scores, it was Lima who would rise to the occasion and ring the bell for her inaugural win.
“This feels amazing,” Lima said. “This is the first World Tour event I’ve ever won and to win it at Bells Beach is like a dream. To be the first winner from Brazil to ring the Bell, it’s amazing. I am so happy. I hope everyone in Brazil stays up and parties big.”
The high-flying Brazilian wasted no time in racking up scores against Gilmore, opening with a 9.17 before backing it up with an 8.17 in the opening minutes of the Final to put her opponent on the ropes.
“Steph (Gilmore) is so good out there in any conditions and I knew I needed to get scores on top of her quickly,” Lima said. “I was able to get really strong waves at the start and my boards felt like they were working really well.”
The win rockets Lima into No. 2 on the ASP Women’s World Tour ratings, once again cementing her position as a legitimate ASP Women’s World Title threat.
“The World Title is always my goal, every year,” Lima said. “Last year was a really good year for me, but I couldn’t win an event. Now that I have a win, my confidence is very high and I look forward to the next event.”
Gilmore was the form surfer of the morning, eliminating Paige Hareb (NZL), 18, in a close Quarterfinal before racking up the highest single-wave score of the event (a 9.60 out of a possible 10) in her Semifinal bout, but was unable to find a rhythm against her South American opponent in the Final.
“Silvana (Lima) finally got me and she was ripping,” Gilmore said. “Her win was well-deserved and I hope it creates a great rivalry for the year ahead.”
Despite her runner-up finish, Gilmore has further established her stranglehold on the ASP Women’s World Tour ratings lead heading into the mid-year break.
“Of course I’m disappointed not to come away with the win but runner-up is still a solid result for me,” Gilmore said. “Bells is one of those places that makes you hungry to come out on top and it would have been amazing to get three in a row. Congratulations to Silvana though and I’ll look ahead to the rest of the year.”
Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 18, 2009 ASP Dream Tour rookie and last year’s ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) No. 1, put is a solid performance at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro, ousting veteran Jacqueline Silva (BRA) and former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, from competition before falling to Gilmore in today’s Semifinal.
“I had an okay start but Steph (Gilmore) really came steaming back with some big scores,” Fitzgibbons said. “There were definitely a few waves I would have loved to have been on, but that’s how our sport goes and the ocean wasn’t in my favor this time around. Last year was a good year for me so I am trying to take confidence from that to find a big result as the year progresses.”
Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, former ASP Women’s World Champion, put in another strong performance at Bells Beach, taking down Samantha Cornish (AUS), 28, before falling to eventual winner Lima in the Semifinals.
“It is still a pretty good result and I am happy for that,” Mulanovich said. “I couldn’t do anything out there so it was frustrating. I was a bit nervous and couldn’t really read the waves that well. I was just falling off, getting stuck on my turns and once you do it once, it gets stuck in your head so it is a little bit psychological. I am always stoked to come back here though. I love this wave and I love this place.’

Currently on the north shore of Oahu, the Women's Pipeline Pro Tidal 9 contest is being held. This week I'll be down there doing live paintings for a silent auction. Today I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing musician and awesome surfer Ashley Lloyd. It was a great time to paint at Ehukai beach park while listening to Ashley jam out between surf sessions!

Here is my SXSW fashion wrap-up. Some great and inspiring outfits. Some what were you thinking outfits.. and some... just entertaining.
This is Tess. She works for Pony Shoes and is always super cute. One of those girls that everytime you see her you see a item worn in a way that inspires you. Plus I think the smile is half the outfit. It's always on. But the coolest part of her outfit today was that she had a evil feather smily face in her hair and she didn't even realize. This guy is killing it. leather pants, grey 80's hair.. bad tattoos... rocking out. I could not get enough of him. I was super stoked to see him play. Till he went on stage with a girl in all hot pink with fake hot pink streaks in her hair. He looked so authentic.. he should be in a real band.. com'on! Half Borat half John Waters. This kids outfit was almost amazing. Little Boots. Wow. She was so cute in person, that dress, the necklace, the everything. her shoes are even amazing. I'm pretty sure these ladies borrowed their 13 year old daughters clothing before going to SXSW. And this guy borrowed all his sisters clothes. I know androdgony is in... but that cardigan is to make your girls look perky.. not show off your few chest hairs. I hope this guy was joking.

Pictured: Aussies won today their fourth consecutive Gold Medal in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship. Pic: ISA/Watts Team Brazil Wins the ISA World Junior Aloha Cup (Salinas, Ecuador) April 5, 2009 - In a dramatic come from behind victory, Team Australia was crowned the 2009 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Champions today in Salinas, Ecuador. Australians Dean Bowen and Tyler Wright won individual gold medals for Under 18 Boys and Under 18 Girls. Keanu Asing from Hawaii won the Under 16 gold medal. Team Brazil won the Aloha Cup, an Olympic style ISA specialty tag-team event. 2005 ISA World Junior Champions, Hawaii, received the team silver medal, Brazil bronze and USA copper. France placed fifth overall, South Africa sixth, New Zealand seventh, Tahiti, Peru and Costa Rica came in eighth, ninth and tenth respectively. The largest crowds ever seen at a junior surfing event packed the beach for eight days at la FAE and were on hand to witness a thrilling conclusion to the contest this afternoon. Today's final was a triumph for Australia who found itself relegated to sixth place in the standings only two days ago. “It comes down to the fact that all of our kids have the real Aussie pride,” said Australian coach Mark Richardson. “At the world juniors, there are so many good surfers and there is a lot of pressure. But when the pressure comes on, our kids step up. They've got big, big hearts. They stayed positive and they didn't give up.” Bowen was knocked into the repercharge rounds earlier this week, losing to Costa Rican Carlos Munoz, Brazilian Thiago Guimaraes in round three. In a test of endurance, Bowen battled his way through seven elimination rounds before making it to the finals, impressing the 12 member judging panel on his way to taking first in all but one of his heats. His final match opponents, Brazilian Miguel Pupo, French surfer Maxime Huscenot and Hawaiian Dylan Goodale, all came through the qualifying rounds. In the Boys Under 18 final heat, Bowen took the lead catching the first wave, working the left point with huge frontside turns all the way to the shore. Bowen's next scoring wave solidified his first place lead. Pupo made an attempt to move into first with two back-to-back waves and a combined score of 15.06, but Bowen held the lead. With eight minutes still on the clock Bowen sealed the door shut with a huge 9.10 leaving Huscenot and Goodale way behind and needing a combination of 17.61. Huscenot's last wave featured a huge free falling floater on the outside section and pulled him up into third but with time running out, but he couldn't find the last second wave he needed to win. In the end, Pupo won silver, Huscenot bronze and Goodale copper. “I feel on top of the world,” said an emotional Bowen after the win. “This is by far the biggest win of my life. I train for this contest all year, it is what I do. I am stoked, I cannot believe we won. I would like to dedicate this win to my late mother whom I lost when I was nine years old, and to my father who is recovering from knee surgery back at home.” In the Under 18 Girls Final, Australian Tyler Wright was up against 2008 ISA World Junior gold medalist Australian teammate Laura Enever, USA surfer Courtney Conlogue and Hawaiian Alessa Quizon. After charging through the main rounds through all eight days, Wright came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, posting the first big score of the final and holding on to first for the entire 30 minutes. USA surfer Courtney Conlogue kept right on Wright's heels, also posting big scores, but in the end was left needing almost nine points to overtake Wright. Coming in from the water on the shoulders of Australian teammates and wrapped in the Aussie flag, Wright poured water over herself to cool down from an exhausting and intense final. “This is so awesome,” said Wright. “Every heat this year in Ecuador has been a hard. There are so many good competitors here from around the world. I knew I had to just focus on my own game out there in the water and not worry about the others. We hit rock bottom the other day and it didn't look as though we would be in the medal rounds, but we pulled together as a team. The support we've given each other has been amazing.” The Under 16 Boys was one of the toughest divisions this year. Stacked with talent, the race for gold seemed as though it could easily have gone to any one of the top 16 juniors. Surfers from Brazil, USA, Costa Rica, Peru, South Africa and Hawaii all had a shot at the top podium spot and Under 16 gold medal. Coming down to the final heats, Hawaii's Keanu Asing made it clear he was going to prevail as the 2009 ISA World Junior Champion. Coming back from deep in the repercharge rounds, Asing set his radar on the gold and gave it all he had. “This is the biggest thing I have ever won,” said Asing. “I am so stoked to have pulled through the repercharges. I think the loss in round four actually helped me. It made me more charged up and more focused. I knew I had to get good waves because every heat could have been my last. Coming to Ecuador has been an incredible experience. We have had good waves all contest and everyone surfed really well.” In the final heat, Gabriel Medina from Brazil fought hard, just narrowly missing first by 0.16. Medina also had the highest single-wave score of the heat with a 9.52, but was unable to overtake Asing despite a combined score of 17.38. South African David Brand came in third, needing nearly a perfect 10 for first. Brazilian teammate Jesse Mendes finished fourth. In a great show of sportsmanship, all four surfers embraced and congratulated each other after the heat. In the Aloha Cup, Brazil pulled ahead for the win over France, Ecuador and South Africa. Making the final was a proud achievement for the host nation, which showed all week how talented and welcoming its surfers are. The day concluded with the official medal ceremony with the crowning of the 2009 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Champions. “This is where we show the world that the Olympics of surfing are for real,” said ISA president Fernando Aguerre before the medals were awarded and the national anthems of the winning teams were played. “Muchas, gracias, Ecuador!” As winners of the Under 18 Boys and Under 18 Girls, Dean Bowen and Tyler Wright will also receive entry spots in the 2010 Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast Trials, an Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour event. How To Post a Music Player to your Profile:
As I make my way through the site reading athletes comments and seeing what people are up to, I often find similar topics and questions. One topic that I find quite often is "How do i post a playlist to my own profile?" So I've decided to post a blog to help anyone that wants to do this. Just follow the instructions and notice the red marks on all of the images. It only takes about 5 minutes!
1. Go to www.playlist.com. Create an account, and then a playlist. You can add and delete songs until you have a playlist you like.
2. Once you have done this, go to the page that has your playlist, which should look like the one below. On the right hand side of the page, click on 'Generate Code.'

3. Click on Option E, like the one you see below.

4. Select the playlist you would like. You can make multiple playlists.

5. This page allows you to make a few different selections to customize your playlist. Once you have them set, click on the 'Get Code' button.

6. Copy the code that you see in the box.

7. Now go to your profile on Loop'd and click on the 'Add Content' button in the top right of the screen. Then click on 'Free Text or HTML' in the second column on the left, as seen below.

8. Once the window pops up, uncheck the 'Check to display heading box' and click on the 'Source' button. Paste the code that you have copied into the box below. Hit Save.

9. The music player will be shown in the top of your profile. To move the player, just click on the 'Free text or HTML,' as seen below, then drag and drop it somewhere else on the page.

Remember that anytime you want to add or delete a song from your player, just go to www.playlist.com and make the changes. It will automatically update the player on your profile!
I hope this helps out! Music is a great way to express yourself, so get out there and start creating your playlists!

I'm spending my last 5 days in Canada in 65 degree wet rainy springtime mudpuddly weather and I kind of love it. This is the first year I actually spent most of the winter in Canada so I paid my dues to be able to watch springtime unfold. The rich brown mud and dead grass will soon be sprouting with the green shoots of the brightest most fragrent flowers of the year. I've tapped the last of the maple trees and have been boiling all weekend to make maple syrup. For those who don't have a chance to enjoy this process, the maple trees are tapped for the early spring sap which is clear and watery with a slight sugary taste. That is boiled down until 96% of the water has evaporated (an all day process) and what's left is a dark amber coloured liquid that tastes great on pancakes! If you boil it down too much, you get maple sugar, which is great on ice cream. Although the syrup could be purchaced at the grocery store for much less than the time it takes to make... there's something magical about the process. What I like the most is the feeling of connection I get to the people who enjoyed the land before me by following this ancient springtime ritual. In 5 days I'll be drinking young coconuts and enjoying guava butter on toast, but until then I'll be having a great time mucking around in the wind and rain looking around for signs of spring.
Here is my interpretation of sap collecting:

I've done some crazy things throughout my surfing career, launched myself into some pretty big mounds of ocean, searched out some waves in the middle of the ocean, crossed many continents in search of new waves,
however, what I did on Sunday March 29th, 2009 was the most physically and mentally grueling thing I have ever done in my life, the challenge, Stand Up Paddle from Catalina Island to Dana Point harbor. Total miles if going in a straight line 39.8. However the conditions were less than ideal with strong winds from the south blowing us off course and a mix of northwest and south swell added in. The day started at 3 am when I awoke to head down to the Dana Point Harbor. I met up with my teammate Bridget Saeman, her brother and our captain for the day Bryce Saeman, we gave a ride to a fellow SUP racer who was racing on a three-man team and missed his ride the day before. We headed off in the pitch dark towards Catalina at 4 am. After a very rough ride we arrived in Avalon at 6:30 am with just an hour and a half before start time.

We hadn’t yet registered for the race as we only just found an escort boat two days prior to the race so it was touch and go whether or not we were even going to be able do the race. My nerves were going nuts before the race, as there was at least one other girl team. On our team it was just the two of us on a 14-foot race board. The other girl team was a team of 4 girls on a 18 foot race board. So they had a huge advantage. Bridget and I had worked pretty hard training for this race. Originally I thought we were going to be the only girls team. To date I’m pretty sure there has never been a girl team to ever do this race. So, I was originally doing the race just to be part of the first girl team to ever accomplish this feat. When I found out that there was another girl’s team, I was in it to WIN. Our strategy was to alternate every 20 minutes. We decided to have Bridget start and I would finish.

Bridget got off to a great start putting some distance between us and the other girl team and even took the lead on some of the guy teams. As we got going we continued to break far away from the other team. Once we got away from the protection of the island, the south winds really started to kick in. The only thing I could focus on throughout the race was 20 min. It was the longest 20 minuets while trying to sprint every time I was in the water, even though my body was telling me otherwise. And it was the shortest 20 minuets when it was my turn to rest on the boat. My brain couldn’t quite wrap itself around the distance or the total amount of time we’d be paddling or else I would freak out. At one point in the race I had a bit of a meltdown. When I could no longer see land behind me, could not yet see land in front of me, and the wind was blowing so hard I could only paddle on my left side and I still felt like I was going to end up in Long Beach. Our captain, Bridget’s brother Bryce kept reassuring me that I was on course. However, my mind was having a melt down. At one point I got in the boat after we switched off and I threw my paddle. I was also really out of it as it was really hard to eat and keep my body fueled property. Food made me feel like I wanted to vomit; only I knew that if I didn’t fuel my body I would be in really bad shape.
Being out in the middle of the ocean like that you feel so insignificant. You start thinking about weird stuff like how huge the ocean is below and around you. How many creatures must be lurking beneath, you are always kind of seeing things in your peripheral wondering not if your going to see a big shark but when. Then there is our escort boat, there were times where it was really far away from me and I would start thinking what if a huge whitey just showed up right next to me, what would I do? I kept trying to prepare myself for the worst. The only mysterious thing we saw was humungous sea lion, his head was HUGE! We couldn’t quite figure out what it was for a while but as we got closer to it we noticed that it was a huge beast just checking us out. There were a couple bird incidents where from a distance you couldn’t quite tell what it was, it gets your heart going that’s for sure. We paddled through a pod of common dolphins they are so cool! I was hoping we’d come across a mega pod, those are super cool it’s like miles of dolphins as far as the eye can see. But this little pod was pretty insane. Once we could see land in the distance things became a little more positive. I got through my rough time, but then it was Bridget’s turn to crash. She was in pretty bad shape, as we got closer. It was so hard to paddle when the wind is howling and each time you look up it doesn’t ever look like you are getting any closer. I tried my hardest not to look at the land so that I wouldn’t get discouraged.
We did a pretty good job staying on course. However the very last leg we were just a little off and had to paddle about 2 miles or so straight into the howling south wind to round a buoy and head into the final stretch into the harbor. I took over the last leg and once I rounded that buoy and had the wind at my back, I almost wanted to cry I was so relieved that it was almost over. I was also finally able to paddle on both sides. As before I could only paddle on my left in order to fight the wind. I don’t know how I did it but I pretty much sprinted the entire way to the finish line. I really just wanted to get the heck off of that board and I knew that the faster I paddled the sooner I’d be done!
What an experience, I was so out of it after the race I couldn’t really talk or function. I am happy I set my mind to do something so huge. To me it almost had nothing to do with the paddle, but it had everything to do with setting out to accomplish something that was super intimidating, that was unknown to me, something I knew I had a good chance of failing at, but then going ahead and doing it anyways, and slowly but surely proving myself wrong.
I want to thank Chuck Patterson for talking me into doing this crazy race. I want to thank my teammate Bridgett for motivating me, training, getting the boat, and for having a great attitude. Big props to Bryce Saeman, for the willingness to spend all day on the boat driving us, and for cheering us on. Bushy for letting us use his baby (the boat).HOBIE for letting us train on their boards and getting us a kick ass 14-foot carbon fiber board for the race. Meg and Dave Chun for custom making me some amazing KIALOA paddles.H20 AUDIO for providing us with amazing set ups for our Ipods. There is no way I could have done that race with out music. My friend Steve for filming.GO PRO for providing us with killer cameras. My sister for getting me an amazing hour long massage the day after the race. And most of all I want to thank my son Taylor for being a huge inspiration, for cheering me on, and hanging on the boat all day!
