Keep A Breast wants to hank you to everyone who came out and made the Keep A Breast Hawaii event a huge success. Unfortunatly I was unable to be there but several piper girls including Christina and Shea were in attendance. Special thanks to the artists for donating their time and talents to paint the casts. Word on the beach is this was the party of the winter up here on the North Shore. The bands rocked it and DJ Eskae held down the dancefloor as usual. Shouts to Pocket Full Of Monsters and The Ground Up Pirates who painted the massive 8′x12′ wall LIVE! The pandas looked AMAZING. Also thanks to Vitamin Water and Emergen-C for keeping the people hydrated. Most importantly, we were able to raise $2,000, not including sales of the breast casts, for The Rell Sunn Education Fund and Keep A Breast. We are proud to be working with Wyland Galleries in Haleiwa, HI as the official seller of the K.A.B. Hawaii breast casts. Proceeds will go to The Rell Sunn Education Fund and Keep A Breast. The casts are now on display and available for sale at:
Wyland Galleries 66-250 Kamehameha Hwy # H Haleiwa, HI 96712 808.637.7498.

This year New Year's Eve dresses are all about embellishments from Fringe to Sequins you can't go wrong with that little black dress that has that little something extra. Last year i you said Fringe you would think Minnitonka boots and fringed purses but this year its all about that 1920's sex appeal. My first pick would be the handmade Eden dress from With Hearts in My eyes. The 22 inch fringe is hand dyed and the dresses are made to your body specifications. For something you can dress up or down try Betsey's Fringe Skirt. Dress it up with a slinky cami or dress it down with a fitted vneck and some fun accessories. For the fashionable on a budget try Targets Limited Edition Go International Fringe Dress.
Somehow sequins have always meant NYE to me. Maybe it's the resemblance to a disco ball but it seems there is always that girl at the party so shiny she screams Hey come look at me! For me sequins have to be placed with care. Try this Charlotte Ronson racerback dress. The sequins are minimal yet sexy with a racerback and low cut front and the wool of the dress makes it warm enough to wear without that giant winter shrug. For those with a high budget this NYE check out Marc for Marc Jacobs Karly Special Dress. With it's price tag over $500 this asymmetrical dress is not for the meek. For those who would like there one time wear dress to cost less than a ticket to the gaslamps clubs check out Forever 21's sequin mini dress with sleeve embellishments.

This photo was taken last week at Cardiff Reef by my favorite California photographer, Chris Grant. The waves were really small, so we were making a lot of "Lake Michigan" and "Barbie-sized waves" jokes.
Later, Chris sent me this photo with the caption: "The best noseride Lake Michigan's ever seen!!" I forwarded it to my dad, who sent it to a friend from Michigan. The non-surfing friend actually thought the photo was taken at Lake Michigan, and wanted to know where exactly Cardiff, Michigan was located!! She said the name of the town was "kind of obscure..."! Funny thing is, I actually have surfed in Lake Michigan... but a meager day at Cardiff Reef is an epic day on the Great Lakes!
More of Chris Grant's photos can be seen on his amazing women's surfing website: www.jettygirl.com

Just finished vocal exercising, song rehearsal, and left over dinner from last night. Needless to say, I'm feeling pretty good. Time for my guitars to get some serious TLC, oh the proverbial act of re-stringing five guitars and polishing them till they shine like the top of the Chyrsler building.

When it Rains It Pours, The drive up the I-5 of California entails a long endless road of empty fields and a mind full of thoughts. I left my house around 6 am - and blasted all my tunes from the past along the way... Offspring, nofx, mason jennings, alan jackson. The final section of the road down to the lake was serene, and beautiful. The lake was low and desert like since I had last seen it. I finally made it to the dock at 2 pm as I had hoped. I parked my truck and made my way down the ramp. I was at ease... For the first time - in a long time I was alone and at peace. No one around, the hot dry air was surrounding me and the warmth of the sun heated my shoulders. I waited....I soon heard the echo of loud streaming music and laughter... A boat was in the distance. It swung it's way around and entered the no-wake zone. I jumped in excitement. The boat got closer and the crew of 12 greeted me, including my boyfriend - who was wearing his short, tight red and white star quiksilver boardshorts I gave to him. (oh I love those!)... I was ecstatic. 3 days ahead filled with sun, exercise and relaxation. I piled me gear in the boat and we headed out. We arrived at the houseboat which was tucked away in a corner far from any other human interaction. I threw all my bags on the upstairs bunk and we headed out for some afternoon wakeboarding... It was incredible to ride on such smooth water. It was the best feeling with the sunsetting over the hills, the smooth glassy water at my feet, and not a care in the world. The days and nights were perfect. Good food, good people, laughing, joking, relaxing, music, cruising... All the things I love in life. Things can take a turn oh so quickly when you are on top of the world ..The next day we loaded onto the boats for some wakeboarding. I took off riding switchstance - I went to 180 back to regular and all of the sudden I hit the water at full force. Something smacked me hard on the head. I figured it was just the water but when I came up everyone was looking at me weird. They yelled "your head is bleeding!" I felt my head and looked at my hand and it was completely covered in blood. I was so completely annoyed that I was injured because I didn't want anyone to have to go out of their way to take me to the doctor... I thought the cut was salvagable so when we got back to the houseboat we tried some medical superglue to hold it together - it didn't work and stung like crazy. I decided it would be best to get a few stitches. The boat driver gave me a ride back to the Marina and just as I was walking up to the truck a crew of people told me there was a car accident and a car ghostrode down the hill into a bunch of other cars at the bottom. I scurried up over the hill as fast as I could only to see my nice 2006 dodge ram truck smashed into by a car. A Ford Ranger had lost it's brakes, shot down the hill - swiped a brand new prius, and pushed an additional car into my truck. Long story short - I waited there with my bleeding head to get it all figured out. Luckily I finally made it to the doctor hours later. I got stitched up fine and the truck will get fixed. I really do believe - when it rains it pours. I was bummed I had a day of bad luck. But at the same time I was so greatful for everything I have in my life. A truck is just a truck, and a cut will heal. I'm so thankful I am doing what I love, I am enjoying every minute of life, and I am surrounded by amazing people that inspire me everyday. Until Next Time, Hillary

A chilly air knocked on my window pane this morning; I made the mistake of letting it in. Now fall's stampeding its way down the California coastline, the trees are dropping their leaves and the water's dropping degrees, and summertime is on its way to another hemisphere. Can I go too?

This week has been full of "hellos"... hello to the North Shore after being away 3 months, hello to my hanai family, the big waves and humid air, hello again to love and heartache, hello to secret places and hideouts, to chilly nights, a house full of puppies, to the trail of sand that follows me everywhere I go.... I got my big box of Triple Crown shirts this week (my design was chosen as official Triple Crown merchandise) and even though I was given a generous amount to give away to friends and family, I'm already running out! The design printed well and I'm very happy with it. Unfortunately the towel design ended up with a very large white border around it for some reason. I'm not stressing about it too much though, I'm already mentally gunning for next years design. This weekend I will be painting at the Wyland Gallery North Shore with my good friend Heather Brown (designer of the Women's Triple Crown poster). If you're in the area, please stop by and say hello we'd love to meet you. It's the Wyland in Haleiwa (North Shore Marketplace across from Quicksilver) Much aloha...

In the end we became the ultimate surf sacrifices. We took one for the team as we left pumping surf to jump in the taxi and head to the airport for home. Yet it was time for us to go, and we were sent off with a magnificent bang! Our last few weeks in Barra were bursting with activities. We had projects to finish, travel plans to arrange, catching up with friends to do, and had some great parties to attend.October 12th marked Barra’s 43th anniversary commemorating the formation of the Collectivo, a formal agreement between the residents of Barra to work together and share resources. photo by Kale Gray
The festivities begin with the Convite de Flores, which consists of a parade of ladies, or tejuanas, dressed in their finest regional wardrobe of intricately embroidered velvet blouses walking through town accompanied by a marching band. Kemi, Aubrey, and Julieta had the honor to be chosen to participate in the parade. They had made so many friends with the local women that they dressed them up in the gowns and treated them like family. Aubrey looked so beautiful in the velvet blouse! photo by Kale Gray
The women carry baskets of fruit and snacks on their heads, and circle the town ending up at the church to make offerings. Then they descend the hill upon which the church stands and hurl the fruit at a crowd of hungry and ecstatic children. The kids scramble for the fruit as it flies through the air, trying not to get banana slapped. The parade ends with everyone dancing in the streets to live music, amidst the smell of fresh peeled mandarins. But this was just the beginning. The next day firecrackers start at 5:30 a.m. to wake the town for morning mass. We were tempted to go, as they serve fresh hot chocolate and homemade bread following the service. We opted to sleep off the cervesas from the night before. Mid-day mass is followed by more food, and evening mass starts the real party at the Agencia Municipal, or community center. The entire town, including all guests and travelers are treated to a fabulous meal of birria (stewed beef) and tamales. The beer flowed like water, and the little Coronitas went down fast. Multiple bands lit up the stages with high energy to get the people moving. The grandmas are the ones who take over the dance floor! Lo enjoying some Tamales!
The party goes on all night, with many people taking breaks to shower and then come back until the wee hours. We danced until Aubrey wore holes in her sandals! Later that week we were surprised by the arrival to Barra of my cousin Jeremy Sherwin and his dad, Louie. Jeremy rides for Reef and absolutely rips. He tore the little Barra zippers to shreds. photo by Louie Sherwin
Jeremy is working with the Reef Redemption Program, which has as one goal to use more environmentally friendly materials in the manufacture of their products. They are also reducing waste during production, and using salvaged building materials in the construction of their stores and factories.

After finishing the Slow Sand Filter we moved on to build a Composting Toilet for Pepe’s Cabanas. Pepe is planning on expanding his business by adding more Cabanas. He is excited to try new ways of dealing with human waste that keeps it out of the ground water. Worms present in the toilet consume the human waste and convert it to fertilizer. The whole setup cost around US$50 to build. (Download plans for Composting Toilet)
The last night of our stay, Pepe and his sister Novy treated us and a special crew of our traveling compadres to a fine home cooked traditional meal of mole, which is basically chocolate chicken. Kale Gray from Oregon, and his partner Pepa from Australia, were a part of the crew. They rocked up to Barra a few weeks after we did and parked up along side us, becoming our faithful and fun neighbors for the rest of the trip. Kale is an amazing photographer (note photo credits) and Pepa is a super creative artist who helped me get crazy with the spray paint (check their blog). There were also the Canadians, aka “Canooks”, who graciously swept into town and literally swept it up! They were an amazing energetic crew who lead beach clean-ups and are even planning to start fundraising to get “Books for Barra”, a Library for the town. It was so incredible to meet so many inspired and motivated people who are all uniquely sharing their gifts and taking positive action. Aubs taking a late one
The next morning, the day of our departure, we hit the dawn session on the point. It was absolutely firing! It was the best day we had seen since the day we arrived two months earlier. It was definitely a bittersweet goodbye, as we peeled ourselves out of the ocean so we could catch a cab to the airport. It was a good way to leave, though, and we will have the memory of those waves in our minds when we return in four months! photos by Louie Sherwin
We left our truck Ellie in Barra. She is sleeping peacefully under the shade of the tamarind tree. We will return in late February after visiting our families for the holidays and working a bit. We plan on continuing on south, to Panama. photo by Kale Gray
Team SWoBs are now home, enjoying the wonderful Santa Barbara sunshine. We made it in time for Grammies 76th Birthday, Cousin Noals Wedding, and caught the tail end of Internatinal Natural Building Colloquium at the Orella Ranch. We feel so blessed to have an ever expanding amazing group of family and friends!
While home we are working on raising funds for the continuation of our journey and work. We will keep you all posted on upcoming fundraising events, which are sure to be great parties!

Many, many blessing and thanks to all who have supported us along the way!

We still haven't heard any word about how the Federal government will rule regarding the appeal of the California Coastal Commission decision. Remember, the Secretary of Commerce must decide between Oct 24, 2008 and - Jan 7, 2009. Therefore a decision will be made before Obama takes office.
While we're waiting, we are far from idle… the Surfrider Foundation is continuing our public outreach. This weekend (Nov 7-9) we will be down at the Oxbow World Longboarding Tour at San Onofre State Beach educating the public about the proposal to build a toll road through this precious park. This surfing competition brings the world's 48 best longboarders together. Come check out the surfing and stop by our booth to say hi!
We will also continue the annual tradition with the South Orange County Chapter of Surfrider by hosting another holiday party to raise awareness and funds for the Trestles campaign (more details to come soon).
Finally, the Save Trestles campaign will receive a Recognition Award from Convicted Artists at their Extreme Sports & Artist Charity Event. Over the summer, the Trestles campaign also received a Special Recognition Award from Surf Industry Manufacturers Association for our work to stop the toll road. We are extremely honored to receive such accolades!
The Extreme Sports & Artist Charity Event will take place Dec 13 in Irvine; and will feature several high profile athletes, a silent auction, a skateboard competition, a comedy show, and the Master of ceremonies will be Brooke Jena Lewis, the talented comedian, who has shared the stage with countless acclaimed actors and comedians. For event and ticket information contact: Steven Arredondosarredondo@convictedartist.com

Thursday, August 7, 200 On the corner of Minnesota St. and S. Coast Hwy in Oceanside, looking through the window beyond the black and white striped curtains, is a place filled with beautiful art, music, and a unique group of beautiful people with passion and joy. I am sitting here with Desiree Dawn Kuhn, part owner of Swiv Takle Circus. We are sitting here at Swiv with a cup a tea on a bright, fresh morning in the dirty O...
Rochelle: What is Swiv Tackle Circus all about? Desiree: We are a group of artists that built a creative world for our fellow artists, our community and our world. Swiv is something that promotes unity, creativity and culture. It’s important for us to have our vocation be our passion.
Rochelle: I noticed Blackass, riding a bike outside playing music. Desiree: (Laughs), Yes! I know! He is our resident DJ, our insanely talented designer, builder, backstage artist and Master of the Swiv language. Rochelle: Swiv Tackle Circus. What is that? Desiree: It is a Gallertique, a fusion of a gallery and a boutique. Swiv is for new days of living, embracing your inner glide. Tackle is short for spectacular! Circus stands for unity, community, fun, performance, joy, freedom, and art. We all bring something to the table and it makes for a good mix of vision, fine art and the modern day world. Rochelle: Who is all? Shaney jo Darden, the fine art curator and over-all Swiv Maestro. She has a huge roster of artists in which to choose. Blackass is the resident DJ & “shop guy”. He’s a Swiv genius out of this world. I do the PR,, marketing, art dealing and artist management. Kirsten Kuhn, keeps the books.
Rochelle: You have an array of T Shirts in the Gallery. Desiree: Yes, we carry local and international friends, like Obey and Pony Attack!!, Lewsader, Lovewright Co., Pink Pistol and more. We are thrilled to premier William Attaway’s Collection II for Lewsader, encompassing 3 tee shirt designs all with limited edition with a real Attaway canvas swatch stitched on each one.
Stepping behind Swiv, we find four studio artists spaces and three are still for rent; there is a blog, on swivtacklecircus.blogspot.com. It is also home for Keep A Breast.
Two spaces are occupied, one by Brandon Lomax who is a talented illustrator pushing boundaries in his artwork. We are seeing new things from him all the time. I can see the influence of Swiv in his work and I’m looking forward to seeing the direction his illin’ illies will take.
Rochelle: Regarding William Attaway tell me how you feel about his work? Desiree: His work is powerful. On another level, inspiring, beautiful, strong in presence yet amazingly approachable. His work crosses cultures and boarders, a hybrid of European, African, Ethiopian, Venice street art, you can see it in the bulbous, curvaceous figures seemingly floating in mid air. They find their balance, attracting the viewer to a sensation of utter purity and inner light. The paintings seem to glow from within, each contour line like velvet on the canvas. The sculptures are solid, strong, raw and smooth, weighing up to 1,000 lbs of ceramic vessels sculpted by Attaway’s own two hands. It is awe-inspiring to see these close up, as they are formed, cut, painted and handled by one talented man.
William Attaway’s final showing is tonight at Swiv. Reggae musician, David Kirton, will be playing as well. Stop by and check it out.

Of all the places on tour, who would’ve thought Brazil would have the biggest waves of the year thus far? I arrived in Rio on a beautiful sunny morning with an extremely fat and painful hand from the stitches put in me 48 hours prior to landing in the lush and tropical country of Brazil. Layne, Amee, and Jessi were my baggage handlers because of my gimp hand.
We took a shuttle bus to our hotel, boards loaded to the top. When we turned the bend to the infamous surfing beach of Barra da Tijuca, all I could see was tow surfers and what appeared to be second reef Pipeline. I didn’t even know the waves could be this big here. I was in shock and suddenly didn’t mind being injured ’cause at least I had an excuse to not surf. Layne --the psycho she is -- was contemplating going out even after a massive journey across continents. It’d been a good nine years since we last shared a roof (I think it was Tokushima in 1999. Wow, time flies!). We had the most magnificent view of the city on the 22nd floor. Downstairs, our hotel was a local bakery that had great empanadas and café con leches (coffee with milk). I would caffeine out and hang at the comp watching the waves, waiting for my heat and hanging to get my stitches out. Layne helped me MacGyver my hand up with duct tape. I looked like a robot. It still got wet, though, and I couldn’t paddle or duck dive well so during the WQS event I bombed out pretty quick. The girls were ripping, though, in solid four- to six-foot shorebreak but in the end it was Bec who’d celebrate her first ’QS win in a while. We were all ready to compete in the WCT event now. We dusted off the Brazil cobwebs and the tape was coming off my hand. We had a day off so local ripper Marina Werneck took a couple of us to the local prainha beach, which means, “little beach.” (All over Brazil, no matter where you are, they say there’s a prainha beach. It was beautiful. No hotels, no masses -- just a few surfers, and a couple of professional paddleball players. First day of competition I was excited to get my hand unwrapped and to redeem myself. I went out guns blazing in the first round but sometimes when you get really good scores the first day, it’s hard to back it up the next day. So in Round 3, I had an absolute shocker, and was very, very disappointed. I went back to the hotel and tried to soak it all in. Meanwhile, my roommate (tour veteran, seven-time World Champion and going for another), Layne Beachley, was on fire. Staying with Layne is so different from staying with anyone else. She keeps to herself and always works when she’s not surfing. It’s almost like staying with a big sister, kind of looking out for you but at the same time teases the crap out of you when you let your guard down. We’d reflect on the past 15 years and how the tour’s changed, not changed, how Brazil was different, and what we wanted to do in the future. It was refreshing because Layne knows exactly what she wants to do with her life and knows how to achieve every goal she has. It kind of fired me up. Oh -- and she was very neat and orderly. I was the messy kid, as usual! I stayed around the comp for a few days with lots of rain, huge surf, and Billabong events and parties. Plus, Bec Woods celebrated her 24th birthday. We took her to a big meat house where you pretty much eat ’til you drop and then don’t move for days. Brazil is famous for them -- Scotty, Sof’s boyfriend ate two cows and I was very impressed. We went up to the Christ statue and saw the most amazing sunset and took some really nice pictures. You’re up with the clouds. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that feeling. And last but not least, congratulations to my fellow Hawaiian ripper, Melanie Bartels. Early in the week I knew Mel was going to go big and win this thing. Being sponsorless, she had to miss an event and had fallen down the ratings but she was trying very hard and you can see a new sense of hunger in her. So can somebody please sponsor this girl? They’re saying if she posts a good showing in Manly it could be title on! All in all, Brazil has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, most active lifestyles, some of the best food and, according to all the girls on tour, the best Acai (that’s where it comes from). The people have tons of energy and everyone’s so hospitable. And now, after 40 or some hours of flying back to Hawaii, I finally get some home time and then it’s off to the land down under and my favorite city in the world: Sydney. *READ ALL OF MEGAN'S SERIES, "TRUE TALES FROM THE WORLD TOUR," ON http://www.surfline.com/womens />SURFLINE WOMEN.
